Underway! Frequently Asked Questions (FAQS)

This is the page where you'll find some help for those burning questions about Underway!

Q. Do I need FSUIPC?
A. Yes, you need a *registered* copy of FSUIPC. This was done, because either way you would have to pay for it, and if you already have a registered copy, you won't have to pay twice.

Q. What is the price of Underway?
A. VUSN members and the Aussie P-3 contingent get Underway! for free as payback for helping me learn to fly and helping to debug the beast. Maybe I'll set up a donation button, but there is no need to pay me to run Underway! For all others there will be a $10 fee.

Q. What is Naval Engagement! and how much does it cost?
A. Naval Engagement! does cost $100 and $30/year license (first year included in the base price) , and requires the Linux operating system. If you are interested in obtaining a copy let me know. Naval Engagement! and the supporting programs (scenario builder, platform builder, etc) all require Linux. If you want a Windoze version let me know and I'll put it on the queue. You do not need Naval Engagement! unless you want to run your own server - you have access already to the VUSN server - the ip address of which is in the "server" text field on the opening dialog of Underway!

Q. Where do I put Underway!?
A. Anywhere you like. Do not put it on your desktop because then you will have difficulties upgrading. I recommend C: or C:\Program Files. Do not move any files out of their directories. Underway! uses the directory structure it is bundled with.

The DLLs stay where they are - do not put them in the Modules folder of MSFS. If you want a shortcut on your desktop - right click Underway.exe and selected "Create Shortcut". Then drag the shortcut to your desktop.

Q. The Underway! panel disappears when I am running MSFS.
A. You must use MSFS in windowed mode for now - then Underway! will always be on top. Move it out of the way when you don't need it.

Q. Can I just upgrade Underway! without all the support files?
A. Yes, look for the underway.exe.7z file on the web page. If there are required additional objects - ie new platforms, they'll be included as time goes on. You can always redownload and install everything - nothing will be lost, though all the old files will be overwritten.

Q. How can I tell if I'm connected properly?
A. First you should see your tail number (instead of UNKNOWN). Finally the clock should begin updating as connection to the simulation (Naval Engagement!) occurs.

Q. Does Underway! support X-Plane?
A. Not at the present although it is definitely in our plans

Q. What is a tail number
A. Tail numbers are the numbers painted (generally) on the tail of an airplane. In this case the alphanumerics you entered into MSFS ATC Id when you load an aircraft from the menu. Underway! uses this to determine a valid loadout of your aircraft. Your callsign (via FSInn) is different and not used by Underway!

Q. I was flying low and with my radar turned on I couldn't see my target listed in the ESM box.
A. Underway! uses curvature of the earth. The higher you are the further your radar can see - out to it's maximum range.

Q. I lost contact on my (sonar/radar) and yet it is still on my ESM box
A. Underway! waits three minutes before deleting a contact. This prevents list shuffling which can really hurt the eyes, and allows you to regain contact by turning or reaquiring.

Q. I was at 500 feet and dropped a sonobouy, It seemed to take forever until I got an ESM report.
A. Underway! uses a falling speed of 40 Knots for torpedos and sonobuoys. Once in the water more time is taken as the hydrophone is unreeled until it reaches its assigned depth

Q. I flew over the contact and returned to my home base. Sometime, maybe about 3 minutes, later, my esm report dropped the contact. What is wrong?
A. Most aircraft have radars in their " noses ". This radar has an angle typically of about 120 degrees or 60 degrees either side of course flown. So the radar lost contact when you turned away from the platform. After three minutes of no updates, the esm report will drop the contact. This helps to prevent the list from constantly changing and is more realistic.

Q. I set up my tail number like you said but I still get an error saying it can't load my aircraft. What is wrong?
A. You may have a permissions problem. Check your properties on the Underway! and sub directories and files.

Q. How do I get FSInn to connect to the FSD server
A. Go to your FSFDT/FSCopilot/FSInn folder. In there you will see a group of FSInnNetX.ini files (where X = 1-5). If you do not have all five copy one of the other FSInnNetX.ini files and rename it. Do so that you have Net1 to Net5 files - so there should be six .ini files all told. Net1 is VATSIM so do not touch it. Modify one of the other NetX.ini files (say 3) - right click it and select Open With and select Notepad. Now edit the file as follows:

  • Label=VUSN (or whatver you want to call the server - this is the name that appears in the FSInn control panel
  • UserId=(your logon name)
  • Passowrd=(your password)
  • Server=xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx (where this is the IP address of the FSD server you will connect to)

Now start Fsinn as you normally do and observe that on the control panel there should now be a button that is named what you called the Label= above. Click on it and you should be connected.

Q. When I start Naval Engagement! a requestor pops up saying it cannot connect to Naval Engagement!
A. One of three things may be wrong:

  • Your internet connection is broken
  • The server IP address is incorrect
  • Or most likely the server is down
