Applixware Overview
Applix loads from the CD-ROM into /opt/applix.
I made a soft link so that I didn't need another search path
ln -s /opt/applix/applix /usr/bin/X11R6/applix
It took me a while to figure out why Applix wasn't in color. It couldn't find the rgb.txt file under SuSE which is /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/rgb.txt
Applix consists of two separate programs:
Builder - a graphical user interface builder and integrated compiler/debugger.
Applix - everything else
Words - word processor
Graphics and Presents - slide (show) maker
Spreadsheets - similar to Excel
Mail - yeah, this too
Data - a SQL database access program
Customization is rampant and overkill. But then you can do a whole lot
Can use metric, different currency symbols/placement, dictionary, separators
Can set screen options and printer options
Has it's own directory viewer
Words
can import WP - 7 or Word-6 & earlier plus a few others (Interleaf!) files.
I only had problems with graphics placement from WP. Words just didn't handle the graphics as I wanted them.
Perhaps newsletters using Mastheads would have been better.
Has a variety of Templates and styles.
Does not support (out of the box) End or Home keyboard buttons
Can do multiple columns - mix and match
Does Tables nicely... Even good choices for displaying
Bullets, of course
Spellchecker - after document is finished
Mail merge, forms, and import-export
Unusual accelerators i.e. Cut F3 , Copy F4, Paste F5
Spreadsheets - no experience but seems to have all the nice items
Charts - 14 basic types - can create your own
Graphics - a reasonable drawing package. Not as good as XV but good enough
Slide Show - excellent slide rendition.
Not necessarily a show, can be just slide/overhead preparation
I prefer it over WP
HTML Author - Haven't tried it yet, but That'll be next
All Applix documents can be imported into HTML
